Barro Colorado Island was formed during the creation of Gatun Lake and is the largest forested island in the Panama Canal waterway, measuring 5.8 square miles (17 square kilometers). The Smithsonian Institute maintains several trails and a research facility on the island and offers regularly scheduled visits for anyone interested. Tours depart from Gamboa, which resides along the canal and is home to the Panama Canal Dredging Division.
