Visas Extensions
If you would like to extend your stay beyond the authorized time, we recommend that you do so through a local travel agent, who for a small fee, will process the entire application. The procedure takes approximately 4 days so plan accordingly. Extending your visa, by way of the Immigration Department, is much like changing your money at the bank. Expect to spend plenty of time, possibly all day or more, filling out countless forms. The money saved, if any, is hardly worth the time you will lose in the process.

Recommendations
During your stay in Costa Rica, your passport is often requested, i.e. while exchanging travelers checks, during hotel stays, car rentals, etc. We suggest that your make a photocopy of your passport and travel with the copy, leaving your original in a safer location. It is not necessary to drive with your passport, simply make a copy of your photo page and the page indicating when you entered the country. Law enforcement officials have no legal right to give you a ticket for driving without a passport. More likely than not they are looking for a bribe.
