Costa Rica's Santa Elena Reserve is comprised of 12 kms of trail ( 7.5 miles), which are divided in 4 different trails, all of which are in excellent condition. This is one of the best places in the Costa Rica for birdwatching. This Preserve belongs to the High School of Santa Elena, and all proceeds are used for educational purposes and conservation.

TRAILS
Encantado

3.4 kms in length, round -trip. There are steep portions, but most of the trail is fairly flat and the best one for wildlife and birding. Here you can see the Resplendent Quetzal and the 3 Wattled Bell Bird.

Caño Negro - 4.5 kms in length, round - trip. For strong hikers, and several tourists have seen Puma on this trail.

Bajo - 2.6 kms in length. A beautiful primary forest trail, and fairly easy to walk.

Youth Challenge Trail - 1.4 kms in length. This trail runs along the Continental Divide, and both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes can be seen on clear days. There are beautiful views of the Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja, Tenorio, Miravalles Volcanoes.

Rates - Adults - $8.00, Students with ID - $4.50, Children - $4.50, Children under 8 year of age don't pay entrance fee. Local currency colones, US$, and traveller checks are accepted. No credit cards are accepted.

Guided Tours - 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. everyday - $15.00 per person plus entrance fee. Night tours on request between 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. - $ 15.00 per person, includes entrance fee.
